Malaria Fundraiser
Submitted by  Mrs. Gorski on 2/02/12
During Catholic Schools Week, Grade 7 Science is fundraising to save lives in Africa. We asked Grades 5-8 to donate at least a dollar each to help buy bed nets which protect families from mosquitos carrying the deadly disease, malaria. The nets are sprayed with insecticides to prevent mosquito bites and 4 people can be protected by each net for about three years. In some countries, malaria has been eradicated but because of the dire economic situation in Africa this disease continues to ravage the continent - most specifically the children.

Our efforts were a success! We have raised enough to buy at least 30 nets - essentially saving at least 120 lives in Africa this year!

Great job Grade 7 - great passion to help!

Collins Writing Program
Submitted by  Marian Burns on 11/02/10
Dear Parent(s):

This year your child will be doing a great deal of writing in class. I strongly believe that writing is critical to language development and the development of thinking skills. We will be writing stories about ourselves and about things we are learning in all subject areas.

In our writing program, we do what I refer to as five different kinds of writing. You will probably hear about these Five Types of writing from your child, so I want to briefly explain them in this letter.

Type One writing is the type we use just to get ideas down on paper. It is not a composition, but rather a "quick write" to generate ideas, express an opinion, make a prediction, or reflect on an event.

Type Two writing, is also a quick-write. With Type Two writing, your child will be answering a specific question about something we are learning about in class. In evaluation a Type Two writing, we will be judging only the content of the writing-not the conventions.

Type Three and Four writing are compositions done to produce ideas and develop specific writing skills. With Type Three and Four writing, we use a strategy called focus correcting. Focus correction is based on the belief that writing improves more quickly when students work to improve a few skills at a time.

We will also do Type Five writing. This is the most difficult type for all writers, especially your developing writers. Type Five writing is writing that is revised and edited to be as free as possible of all types of errors. This kind of "publishable" writing requires multiple drafts. Most of the Type Five writing we do will start as a Type Three or Four. Then over time, your child will polish it so that it becomes a publishable Type Five piece of writing.

You can help at home in several ways. First, encourage your child to write as frequently as possible about a wide range of topics.Second, be aware of the Five Type of writing your child does in school. Remember that all writing does not have to be perfect and free of errors to be of value to your child's language development.

If you have questions or comments about our writing program, please call the school office.

Sincerely,
Marian R. Burns
Principal

A wonderful end to a wonderful year!
Submitted by  Ms. Burns on 6/21/10
St. Catherine of Genoa school was full of excitement as we prepared for the end of our school year. Our Eighth graders, Kindergarten One and Kindergarten Two graduated last week. It was rewarding to see all the students receive their well-deserve diplomas and awards. Our middle school held their annual Science Fair and everyone enjoyed St. Catherine school band performance and Field Day followed by a back yard barbecue.

The children were excited to see their end of the year report card, which included a list of supplies needed for next September and a summer reading list. We ended our week in a meaningful way be attending Mass and we anticipate the fun we will have next week at St. Catherine’s camp.

Thank you to our multi-talented P.T.O, teachers and volunteers who organize our field day, barbecue, recent tag day, bake sale and gold fundraiser. The P.T.O. does not intend to rest this summer, as they are preparing a parish and school cookbook filled with a taste of St. Catherine recipes. To keep in shape, parent volunteers have offered to help move classrooms as it became necessary to expand our Kindergarten One program.

Once again, I would like to thank all our teachers, staff, parishioners, P.T.O members and volunteers who dedicated their time and talent. You truly are shinning examples of a Christian Community “Where Everyone is Family.” Have a wonderful safe summer. Our office will be open most days during the summer months. I look forward to preparing for our opening school day on Wednesday September 8, 2010.

Love & Prayers,
Marian Burns

School Open Tomorrow; Water Guidelines
Submitted by  Marian Burns, Principal on 5/02/10
Just a note: School will be open tomorrow

Precautions we are taking:
  • Children and teachers should bring in their own bottled water for the day.
  • Our Poland Spring water bubbler in the teachers room will be moved out to the hallway for school use.
  • After using water to wash hands, students will use hand sanitizers to disinfect. We will provide hand sanitizers, however you are welcome to send in one for your child's personal use. Preschoolers will be under supervision during this process.

As we are not sure how long this will last, let's follow this procedure until given the clearance from the Massachusetts Water Authority.

    Stay Safe!
